Differences between Partially Oriented Yarn (POY) vs Fully Drawn Yarn (FDY)

Differences Between Partially Oriented Yarn (Poy) Vs Fully Drawn Yarn (Fdy)

The yarn industry is growing rapidly due to the invention and installment of high-end technologies. The most famous and common yarn, Polyester, is bringing highly durable, wallet-friendly, and weather-resistant materials. Considering the countless benefits of polyester, it is always in demand. There are two types of polyesters: Partially Oriented Yarn and Fully Drawn Yarn, both types of yarn have specific features that fulfil the requirement of different industries.

Differences between POY and FDY

Partially Oriented Yarn Fully Drawn Yarn
PARTIALLY ORIENTED YARN (POY) is incompletely stretched filaments with an orientation degree between unoriented filaments and drawn filaments obtained by high-speed spinning. Compared with undrawn yarn, it has a certain degree of orientation and good stability, but cannot be used for textile processing. FULL DRAWN YARN is full stretch yarn. The synthetic fiber filament is further obtained by spinning and drawing. The fiber has been fully stretched and can be directly used for textile processing.
POY can be stretched longer, because POY is a pre-oriented yarn; it is not fully stretched, and the remaining elongation must be above 80%. FDY is a fully oriented yarn; it can be stretched less. The remaining elongation is generally below 40%, which is relatively stable.
POY is cold drawn yarn having higher elongation.
The process includes the natural orientation (partial) of molecular chains.
It is produced in a semi-oriented molecular structure.
FDY is hot drawn yarn having lower elongation.
The process includes the drawing / heat set and orientation of molecular chains.
It is a highly drawn polyester filament / fully oriented filament.
POY is generally used to make textured yarn that can be also used in warping for weaving and warp knitting of fabrics.
It is preferred due to softer feel , better drape, higher recovery, wrinkle resistant, long lasting prints and colours.
FDY is a highly compatible yarn that can be easily knitted or woven with other yarn to produce a variety of fabrics.
It is preferred for use in warping after twisting or sizing due to higher shrinkage and grain effects.
It is available in many Polymer lusters including Semi-Dull, Bright, Full Dull, Super Bright and CDP.
It is available in raw white & dope dyed colours.
It is available in different cross sections as per end use, like circular, trilobal & other different shapes as per end use.

POY is given to the texturizing company for the texturizing process.
It is often used as a special yarn for drawn false twisted textured yarn (DTY) or as draw twisted (DT) yarn.
FDY mainly focuses on quality fabric and avoids texturizing.
It is also used after Twisting and is often used as a special yarn for drawn false twisted textured yarn (DTY) or as draw twisted (DT) yarn.
It is applicable in ladies dress materials, shirts, suits, sarees, knitwears, home textile, automotive materials, sports wear, etc. It is applicable in fabrication of clothes, curtains, high-end sportswear, home furnishing, embroidery, sewing threads, etc.
POY has approximately 2 to 5% crystallinity. FDY has around 35 to 40% crystallinity.
POY is stable for short durations and can be stored for only 6-8 months. FDY has a stable structure, and it remains stable throughout its life span.
Due to the very high amorphous and low crystallinity region, POY has very high shrinkage, which ranges from 50-70%. FDY has shrinkage in the range of 6-12%.
A process like DTY creates bulk in POY. FDY is a flat yarn

High-end technologies are helping in meeting the requirements of various industries. It is producing a range of lustre, colours and has plenty of advantages. This is helping the yarn industry grow exponentially. AYM Syntex, one of the globally known yarn companies, produces high-grade yarns. They use next-generation technology and have expanded their business across boundaries.
